Sperm Donation Process. IVF with Sperm Donation
Successful result of IVF cycle or surrogacy program much depends on the men’s factor. It’s a pity but even despite the high development of ART (Assisted Reproductive Technologies), it’s still impossible to overcome some forms of men’s infertility. In such cases, sperm donation is the only solution for spouses who dream about a child.
What is sperm donation?
Sperm donation is a kind of men’s infertility treatment if man’s testicles don’t produce (qualitative) sperm or are absent because of some preceding injury. Another reason – a possibility of men’s complicated hereditary diseases transfer. On the other hand, sperm donation is a chance for single women to become mother. In all cases, donor’s sperm is freezed and saved in the bank of sperm (in the steam of liquid nitrogen). Sperm donation is not an easy decision for many couples as their future child won’t be genetically connected with a father. That’s why, it’s essentially necessary for both spouses to realize all the aspects of such a treatment and further growing up of their child. Patients who encouraged to use sperm donation are usually interested how the donor’s selection and examinations are conducted.
How to become a sperm donor?
Sperm donors have to correspond to really high requirements. Only physically and physiologically healthy men over 20 but under 40 with correct constitution and features can become sperm donors.
Sperm donor candidates have to pass:
- urologist’s examination;
- tests for infections: gonorrhea, clamidiosis, genital herpes, mycoplasmosis etc;
- blood test for syphilis, HIV, Hepatitis B and C;
- Blood group and Rh-factor;
- genetic checkups: karyotyping and mycoviscidosis test;
- geneticist, psychiatrist and physician’s checkups.
After sperm donation, sperm is freezed and in half a year a sperm donor have to pass all the blood tests for syphilis, HIV, Hepatitis B and C again as it’s possible to define such diseases only in few months after the infection. IVF with donor sperm can be conducted only after the repeated negative results of these tests in 6 months.
Donor sperm can be used for IUI and IVF, IVF and surrogacy programs. If we speak about IVF with donor sperm, it doesn’t differ from the simple IVF cycle. All the steps of the programs are the same, just donor sperm is used after the 6-months quarantine. At the same, usage of sperm after cryopreservation instead of the fresh sperm doesn’t influence the effectiveness of the infertility treatment.
Who can become a sperm donor?
Sperm donor might be selected among the relatives and friends or anonymous professional sperm donors. Bank of sperm includes all the information about the donor’s appearance, nationality, education, occupation, family status, children. Donor’s personal information is confidential and, at the same time, donor isn’t informed about the patients for whom his sperm will be used.
IVF with donor sperm can be used in the cases of male infertility, ejaculatory-sexual disorders or unfavorable medicogenetic prognosis. Earlier, spouses with serious pathologies of egg or sperm had only two solutions: to adopt a child or to be childless. Nowadays due to such programs as egg and sperm donation, spouses get an excellent opportunity to become parents.
